The close relationship between Ford and Mercury during the muscle car era has continued through the millennium with Mercury selecting key power plants for their unique models and performance image. A full size or intermediate powered Mercury sedan coupled with a big or mid block 351 offered excellent performance, enhancing their demand. The Y-block 292 and 312 V8 gave way to the 221-260-289-302 V8 in the early 60’s along with the development of the big block 352-390-406-427-428 over the next 10 years. Mercury Marauders, Cyclones, Comets, and Cougars powered the racetracks often beating or leading Ford teams under the oversight of Holman Moodey, Bud Moore, and the Woods Brothers.

Today Mercury Lincoln Navigators utilize engine technology only found in other Ford performance models utilizing the dual overhead camshaft, 4valve technology to improve power and smoothness of operation in their flagship vehicles.
